With the nice weather we’ve had this winter it’s getting closer and closer to that dreaded time of year, deck staining time! Spring will be here, with nice weather and surely you have better things to do that tackle that deck again, yes again this year. Have you grown weary of this time honored, and nearly yearly tradition-deck staining?
There are options, you don’t have to stain it yourself. You can hire a company to come out and stain it again. They’d be happy to keep coming back year after year and charging you again and again. They don’t do a lot of deck care or restoration, just slap another coat of stain on the already failing one. Sure they power blast it and knock off the loose stuff, which seems like they know what they’re doing. The stain will hide most of the damage, while they use three to five time the amount of pressure a true wood care professional would use.

- 1 1/2 year old stain peeling from the elements
You could always do nothing, that’s an option. Your deck will last several years without protection. Because as that stain flakes off and leaves you with that peeling look, so goes the supposed seal that most, but not all claim is their protection. Doing nothing will allow the water to soak right in and start the rotting process. Depending on exposure that time varies. I have seen cedar rotten in as little as 4 years! That’s right brand new wood, 4 years ago, rotten to the point of needing to be replaced, in only 4 short years. I’ve only seen in twice in 7 seasons of deck care, but 4 years, may be all you have. As you get into 5 or more years that destruction is much more common.
Replacement is another option. Most decks that we work on only have a replacement price of $10,000 to $15,000. That’s your average deck in the suburbs of Kansas City. If you have 1o or 15 thousand dollars extra lying around for replacement then that is definitely an option you may want to consider. However, what are you going to do to preserve that new deck? It will likely need some sort of protection if you re-build with wood. That stain didn’t really work on the last deck, I’m starting to think it may not work on the new one either.
Another option, maybe I’ll build with composite instead of wood! Well it will likely add another $5000 to the cost, so now you’re looking at $15-$20k. We’re starting to talk about some real money now! But wait, the whole structure that supports that composite floor, is wood. Doesn’t it need to be protected? Stained, sealed, or something, right? And have you ever noticed that while that floor is a largest portion of your deck, it was always easiest to stain. It’s those pesky rails, steps, support post, etc that takes all the time. Did I really make my deck easier to maintain with a composite floor? But it’s maintenance free with composite right? Not at all, most manufacturers suggest that you clean you composite 1 to 3 times a year. At least with stain it was every year or two, so you may actually get to skip a year occasionally.
Well there might just be a better way to protect and maintain your deck without replacements or constant re-do’s by yourself or other deck stain companies. Consider permanent sealers, installed by trained professionals that you only pay one time. Kansas City has several to choose from, but only one uses American made products, back by a manufacturer, distributor, and includes labor on any future sealing needs. That company is SealMasters of KC, located in Olathe, KS.
That’s right, SealMasters will seal your deck for the last time, guaranteed in writing. We don’t claim to be maintenance free, and offer our clients on-going support and services, if they desire-at no additional cost! We focus on the protection of your deck and not the color that will fade way and need to be re-done again and again. If you like color on your deck (stain) that’s certainly is an option, and we will get the right stain on your deck for ease of maintenance, so you don’t have to restore it year after year. SealMasters of Kansas City installs SealRx into you deck, yes inside, so the elements cannot wear it away. This deep penetration will not flush out of the wood, and again is guaranteed for 25 years, without reapplication!
When SealMasters takes your deck through our 7 step process, which includes sanding the deck down to remove weather and other damage by the elements, leaving you with that deck you remembered when you first got it. Then the reduced maintenance goes back to you, the homeowner. We do suggest cleaning your deck every year or two, depending on wood type, if you wish to maintain that color. Cleaning is not required, but your deck will get that weathered look without cleaning, but can be restored years later, if you wish. Our client will be able to purchase cleaning kits, to do it themselves, or may even call us for a spring cleaning. We don’t care if you have someone else clean the deck either, and will even give them our simple instructions for doing so, if you wish.

Deck Staining hasn’t really worked for you in the past, is it going to magically work this time, I doubt it. Every year some new and improved deck stain comes on the market with outlandish warranty claims, that only include the product. Again, if it didn’t work the first time do you really want more cans of it? Do they compensate you for your weekends and back-breaking work…I know they don’t!
